The GMK&RTI was established in 1979 by Gujarat State as a Service Institute, the first of its kind in the country. Registered under the Society Registration Act 1860 and Bombay Public Trust Act 1950. Under the restructuring policy, the Gujarat Matikam Kalakari Board merged with the Rural Technology Institute on 12-08-2008.
