The Gujarat Matikam Kalakari & Rural Technology Institute (GMK&RTI) is established in 1979 by The Gujarat State as Service Institute and is the first of its kind in country. Registered under Society Registration Act 1860 and Bombay public Trust Act. 1950. Under the restructuring policy of Boards and Corporatios, Gujarat Matikam Kalkari Board is merged in Rural Technology Institute vide Industries & Mines Department GR No. IAF-1490-243-KH1 dt. 12-08-2008. After the merger of Gujarat Matikam Kalakari Board in Rural Technology Institute now the Institute is renamed as "Gujarat Matikam Kalakari & Rural Technology Sansthan". The endeavor of the Institute is to enhance artisans’ productivity, income, and skills to accelerate the growth of cottage industries through skill development training, modern tools supports and promotion of eco-friendly practices.

Objectives

 

The main objective of the Institute is to support rural artisans and strengthen the cottage industry sector by enhancing their skills, efficiency, productivity, and income through a variety of beneficiary-oriented schemes. These include self-employment generation training programs, toolkit assistance, energy-efficient kiln support for potters, raw material subsidies, and clay idol promotion schemes for clay idol makers. However, more specific objectives are enumerated as follows:-

 
  • To generate sustainable self-employment opportunities by providing short-term, trade-based skill training under the Basic Training Scheme, thereby empowering rural youth, women, and artisans with practical skills across 10 traditional and livelihood-focused trades.
  • To modernize and enhance artisan productivity in the pottery sector by supplying Electric Potter Wheels and Electric Pug Mills at a 75% subsidy under the Toolkit Assistance Scheme, reducing manual labor and improving output quality.
  • To promote environmentally responsible artisan practices through the Energy-Efficient Kiln Scheme, which provides 100% subsidized kilns to potters, aiming to reduce health hazards, fuel costs, and environmental pollution while increasing production efficiency.
  • To promote the use of clay idols and eco-friendly craft traditions by supporting artisans through the Clay Idol Promotion Scheme, which provides subsidized clay, free stalls, and daily assistance during fair to encourage the production and sale of natural, pollution-free idols during festivals.
